Mental Diseases Need For Research to Find out the Possibilities of Homoeopathic Treatment

Dr. E.R. Revi

What are mental diseases and how can homoeopathy help to cure mental diseases? The scope of treatment of mental diseases through homoeopathy is vast-but a lot of research needs to be done to establish this. Since homoeopathy treats the individual and not the disease, it is very natural that it should be a succesful therapy to relieve the disorders of mind.

Different Newspapers and Magazines publish health reports and new research findings. Several articles are being published regarding different mental conditions also. But they are only dealing with the Allopathic approach that is, allopathic medication with general methods like supportive counselling, occupational therapy (OT) etc. ECT (Electro Convulsive Therapy) gets little mention now though it has not been fully avoided. Some psychiatrists consider it inhuman, but some as a tool to tame the maniac. Allopathic medication fails to cure permanently, as it only gives a temporary relief or suppression of symptoms.

These rehabilitation centres should try homoeopathic treatment for the mentally ill patients.
Homoeopathic Materia Medica gives special attention to mental symptoms. Dr. James Tyler Kent, a stalwart for homoeopathy considered mental symptoms as most important. There may vary from over anxiety or anger to mania. He called them “ Mental Generals “.

In the “Repertory of Homeopathic Materia Medica” written by Dr. Kent, you can find all such mental symptoms in the first Chapter ‘Mind’ itself. Examples are - Delusion, Hallucinations, Illusions, Indifference, Mania, Mood variations, anxiety, Anger, Fear, Hostility, Suspiciousness, Hypersensitivity either directly or indirectly. Now a synthetic repertory of ‘Mind’ by Barthel and narthel is also available.

Homoeopathic treatment relies on treating the patient as a whole or as an individual. That is, not only his disease symptoms are considered, but his constitutional and habitual symptoms, thermal reactions, etc. Proven medicines are used to restore the sick to health. Proving means finding the drug’s actions on healthy volunteers. Homoeopathy is based on the principle “ Similia Similibus Curentur” meaning let likes be treated by likes. So the drug which can produce a symptom (s) on healthy people can cure similar symptom(s) in a diseased person, if administered in minute dose. Thus the different mental symptoms found during drug-proving opens up the scope of treatment and research.

Dr. C.F.S. Hahnemann, the father of Homoeopathy, described the symptomatology or totality of symptoms as “outwardly reflected picture of the internal essence of disease, that is the affection of Vital Force”. He discussed about mental diseases from aphorism (§) No.210 to § 230 in his ‘Organon of Medicine.’

One will be astonished to find that various methods described by Dr. Hahnemann 170 years back (when mentally ill patients were tortured in Europe by the then allopathic medical men) are applicable now in dealing with psychiatric cases.

Then he emphasizes the need that the physician and the keeper must always pretend to believe them to be possessed of reason.

According to homoeopathic principles, mental diseases have psoric miasmatic background. (Miasms, to be stated simply, are the fundamental tendencies inherent in a person). Dr. Hahnemann advises to give nonantipsoric or palliative medicines for the temporary relief of mania. After that, by giving suitable anti-psoric medicine, the recurrence can be prevented, if the patient attends faithfully to the diet and regimen prescribed for him. From this, we can infer that Dr. Hahnemann’s knowledge was very well advanced than his contemporaries. Since the psychiatry of today is much developed, there may be some differences of opinion with that of Dr. hahnemann, but many are applicable even today.

So we may try this holistic approach - i.e. Homoeopathic - to give rapid gentle and permanent restoration of mental as well as physical health as said by Dr. Hahnemann.

Central Council of Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) can do a lot in this field. Also, those psychiatrists, who are not contemptuous to other systems can incorporate this with the help of a qualified homoeopathic physician.

The experience and the detailed knowledge of disease of the Psychiatrist, combined with the holistic gentle treatment by homoeopathy will be a boon to the society. Thus, the use of hazardous and addictive allopathic medication can be reduced to emergency or in entirely inevitable cases.

As far as research is concerned, the current method of double blind study may not be ideal, since homoeopathic medicine selection is based on individual peculiarities. So those patients, who are given real medicines should be given their own correct similimum. That means, any single medicine should bot be given to all patients, but according to their homoeopathic indications. Such should be the method in homoeopathic research oriented double blind study. So we may get a group of remedies, from which we have to select the correct one.

This mutually respectful combined work between the professional psychiatrists and homoeopaths has a vast scope of research to serve the humanity.
