The Morning Sickness

Dr. S. Varma

Vomiting in pregnancy is considered normal till the time it does not have deleterious effects on the body of the woman and does not incapacitate her day to day activities. If the vomiting is excessive and persistent leading to dehydration, starvation and acidosis, medical help should be sought. Homoeopathic remedies not only help to relieve the condition of excessive vomiting but also make the constitution of the pregnant mother strong to help her fight infections.

Vomiting is a symptom, which may be related to pregnancy or may be a manifestation of some medical-surgical-gynaecological complications that can occur at any time during pregnancy.

During early pregnancy, vomiting could be the simple morning sickness and could become pernicious with excessive dehydration, starvation and acidosis. This excessive and severe vomiting is known as hyperemesis gravidarum.

Vomiting could be associated with pregnancy but unrelated to it as mentioned before such as in medical, surgical or gynaecological complications. This can happen in conditions such as intestinal infestation, urinary tract infections, hepatitis, keto-acidosis, uraemia, appendicitis, ulcers, ovarian tumours etc.

Simple vomiting is considered to be a result of altered hormonal and immunological states. The patient complains of nausea and occasional vomiting on rising in the morning though it may occur at other times of the day also. The vomitus is small and clear or bile stained. It does not produce any impairment of health or restrict the normal activities of the woman and disappears with or without treatment by 12th to 14th week of pregnancy.

Hyperemesis Gravidarum
It is the excessive and persistent vomiting during pregnancy leading to dehydration, starvation and acidosis (abnormal high acidity of the blood). It has a deleterious effect on the health of the mother and incapacitates her day to day activities. The causes for this are obscure though many theories have been postulated that include hormonal imbalance, pshychogenic theory, dietary deficiency, and allergic or immunological basis.

This excessive vomiting results in many metabolic, biochemical and circulatory disturbances. Inadequate intake of food results in depletion of the energy sources of the body. Water and electrolyte metabolism also gets seriously affected which affects the concentration of various salts in the body.
