Bio-combination No. 3 for Colic

Dr. S. Varma

With the growth of the biochemic system of medicine, many biochemic combinations were developed for treating various common ailments. These combinations constitute of three to four biochemic salts that have a specific action on treating the ailment.

Colic is a severe pain in the abdomen that has a sudden appearance, stays for a period with intermission and passes off as suddenly as it came. It may be accompanied with vomiting, belching or retching and extreme restlessness. Colic may arise from excessive gas, worm infestation, renal stones, intestinal infections, appendicitis and many other such causes.

Colic results from a deficiency of many mineral salts, the chief salt being Magnesia phosphorica. This salt is a major constituent of white fibres, when there is a lack of this salt in the body, these white fibres contract producing spasms or cramps. These spasms or cramps occur in the organ where the deficiency of this salt occurs. For example, if the deficiency occurs in the intestines, there will be an excessive accumulation of gas causing colic. Similarly if the deficiency occurs in the renal area, renal colic results.

Colic can be classified according to the location of the pain. It can be biliary colic, renal colic, intestinal colic or appendicular colic. Biliary colic is characterised by pain the region of liver and may be associated with tenderness or jaundice. Biliary colic may be an outcome of gallstone or a sudden distention of the organ as in congestive cardiac failure.

Renal colic is a result of stone in the kidney, bladder or urinary passage. This type of pain can be distinguished from others by its location; the pain usually starts from the loin and goes down the inner side of the thigh to the urinary meatus. Frequency of micturition and pain while passing urine may be associated.

Intestinal colic may arise due to infection, irritation of the lumen due to some food or intestinal obstruction. This type of pain is generally felt in the centre of the abdomen.

Colic due to appendicitis is severe and is accompanied with vomiting. The pain usually starts around the umbilical region and then spreads to the right side of the abdomen directly over the site of appendix. Pain due to appendicitis requires immediate surgical attention and should not be neglected.

Biochemic salts help in completing the deficiency that leads to colic and thus relieve the pain.

Biocombination No. 3
A combination of all salts that help in relieving the colicky pain has been prepared that constitutes Magnesia phosphorica 3x, Calcarea phosphorica 3x, Natrum sulphuricum 3x and Ferrum phosphoricum 3x. These biochemic salts help to reduce the spasmodic pains and muscular cramps.

Magnesia phosphorica: Magnesia phosphorica is a salt that is a constituent of muscle fibres, nerves, grey cells and bone. Whenever a deficiency of this salt will occur in the body, it will result in spasms and cramps. Therefore, it acts as a great antispasmodic remedy, relieving spasmodic and cramping pains. It cures severe colic that causes the patient to bend double. Warm application gives relief to the patient.

Calcarea phosphorica 3x: when Magnesia phos fails to give relief, this is the second most thought of remedy to cure colic. It is specially suited for colic in teething children. This remedy promotes proper assimilation of food thus aiding in proper digestion.

Natrum sulphuricum: Natrum sulphuricum regulates the water content of the intercellular fluids and is usually indicated in biliary colic with vomiting of bile, in complaints where there is an enlargement of liver and spleen.

Ferrum phosphoricum: It is a constituent of haemoglobin in the body. It is indicated in conditions where there is inflammation. It reduces the inflammation associated with colic and thus helps in relieving the pain.

Biocombination number 3 should be taken in a dose of 3-4 tablets, four times a day. It is easily available in the market and is manufactured by many homoeopathic companies.
