DIABETES >> Glucose Test

Glucose is the body’s main source of energy; it is produced when the body breaks down carbohydrates. Glucose is used by most cells to generate energy and is essential for the daily functioning of the brain and nervous system; the levels of glucose must be within a certain range for the body to function effectively. The transportation of glucose around the body is controlled by insulin, a hormone which is produced by the pancreas. Insulin levels, like glucose levels, must be balanced in order for the body to function properly. The test is used to measure the levels of glucose in the blood; the fasting test is usually used to diagnose diabetes. Once a patient has been diagnosed with diabetes, the glucose test will be repeated regularly (often several time a day) to monitor blood glucose levels.
