The non-surgical treatment of cataract owes its origin to homoeopathy. The first authenticated treatise on this subject seems to be by Burnett (1840–1901) who advocated the treatment of cataract with homoeopathic remedies.

The Cineraria Maritima Succus (CMS) has been used for the treatment of cataract by homoeopaths. This plant was used in the treatment of corneal opacities since long. In homoeopathy it was first introduced by one of the leading homoeopathic practitioner of Venezuela. It has since been extensively used in USA and other countries.
