Allergy

Dr. S. P. S Bakshi

The President of the Central Council of Homoeopathy, Dr. S.P.S Bakshi has researched deeply on the subject of allergies. His views on allergy are expressed in his “lectures on Allergy and its Manifestation”. This is the part III from his lectures on allergies.

Allergy is a hundred headed monster, which attacks various systems of the body simultaneously.

Respiratory system: Causing allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis and adenoids and bronchial asthma.

Skin: Eczema, urticarea etc.

Gastrointestinal system: Stomatitis, peptic ulcers, dyspepsia etc.

Musculoskeletal system: Arthritis.

The most common manifestations of any allergic disorder is inflammation such as in allergic rhinitis, arthritis, colitis etc. and itching or itch, that is itching anywhere in the body right from the scalp e.g. dandruff to eczema and pruritus vulvae.

In the following sections we shall be talking about each one of the above systems in detail with their allergic manifestations.

Respiratory System
Breathing is essential for us to stay alive in which the respiratory system plays a very important role. The respiratory system is composed of upper and lower respiratory system. The upper respiratory system consists of the nose, nasopharynx (sinuses having openings in the nasopharynx) and larynx (voice box). The lower respiratory system consists of the trachea, bronchi and lungs.

The following are the most common allergic manifestations of the respiratory system.

Recurrent Attacks of Cough and Cold
Usually we find that within a year of the birth of a child, he develops recurrent attacks of cough and cold, which if not treated properly increase in frequency and intensity. Also due to suppression after taking strong medicines leads to more complications.

Allergic Rhinitis
Recurrent attacks of sneezing/ hayfever

It occurs continuously or intermittently through out the year due to exposure to allergens. It is marked by recurrent attacks of paroxysmal sneezing, nasal irritation and itching, nasal obstruction with profuse watery discharge. There is also intense conjunctival itching and a sensation of itching in palate and pharynx.

Sinusitis
Sinusitis is the inflammation of one or more of the paranasal sinuses commonly due to upper respiratory tract infection and exposure to various substances/ allergen e.g. dust, pollen, pollution etc.

As the mucous membrane of the sinus becomes inflamed and swollen, the openings that lead from each sinus into the nasal passages become partially or wholly blocked. The mucous that accumulates in the sealed off sinus causes pressure on the sinus walls resulting in discomfort, fever, pain and difficulty in breathing. The common symptoms of sinusitis are headache usually located near the inflamed sinus, nasal discharge, feeling of discomfort and weakness.

Tonsils and Adenoids
Tonsils play a very important role in the body defense against allergic diseases. They are situated at the base of the mouth at the junction of the opening of the pharynx and oesopahgus. These collections of lymphoid tissues are of three types:

  • Pharyngeal tonsils/adenoids
  • Palatine tonsils
  • Lingual tonsils
Both the tonsils and adenoids serve to fight and collect microorganisms from entering the respiratory tract through the throat and in this process, they often get enlarged. This is known as tonsillitis.

The signs and symptoms of acute tonsillitis are:
  • Recurrent attacks of cough and cold accompanied by high fever.
  • Pain in the throat that sometimes extends to the ear.
  • Unpleasant taste in the mouth and unpleasant odour in the nose.
  • Snoring and breathing through the mouth.
  • Slight impaired hearing
Due to recurrent attacks of acute tonsillitis over a period of time, the tonsils become enlarged and unhealthy leading to a condition called chronic tonsillitis.
