Dr. Poonam.V. Khiraya

Non cancerous or benign enlargement of the prostate gland often begins after the age of 50. If you are in this age group or are about to become 50, the following information might be helpful for you to overcome the problem or even to avoid the problem before it starts. A regular examination is necessary for an early detection and cure.

Perhaps there is no other thing in life, which is more important than good health. And it is possible for everyone to enjoy good health, even past middle age provided one takes appropriate precautions at the right time. One problem that appears after middle age in men is the enlargement of prostate gland.

Non cancerous or benign enlargement of the prostate gland often begins after the age of 50. If you are in this age group or are about to become 50, the following information might be helpful for you to overcome the problem or even to avoid the problem before it starts. Sometimes, the prostate enlargement can cause bothersome symptoms but if properly treated and diagnosed can be improved.

Prostate enlargement can also be cancerous which is usually curable in the early stages. A regular examination is necessary for an early detection and cure. Fortunately, a simple part of the standard medical check up-the annual digital rectal examination can help in the diagnosis.

What is prostate and what does it do?
Prostate is a gland of the male reproductive system that is located in front of the rectum and just below the bladder, the organ that stores urine. Prostate is quite small and weighs only about an ounce and is nearly the same size and shape as a walnut. The prostate wraps around a tube called urethra, which carries urine from the bladder out through the tip of the pen*s.

The prostate is made up largely of muscular and glandular tissues. Its main function is to produce fluid for semen that transports sperm. During the male orgasm, muscular contractions squeeze the prostatic fluid into the urethra. The sperm that is produced in the testicles is also propelled into the urethra and during an orgasm the sperm along with the prostatic fluid is expelled during eja*****ion.

What is BHP?
More than half of the males over the age of 60 develop enlarged prostates and the likelihood of developing BHP increases with age. By the age of 80 years about 80% of males suffer from enlarged prostates but only 40-50% of men actually develop any symptoms due to BHP.

BHP affects the inner-most part of the prostate first so the enlargement frequently results in a gradual squeezing of the urethra, where it runs through the prostate causing difficulty in urinating or other urinary problems.

BHP generally does not affect the s*x**l functioning of the male. However, severe urinary symptoms can be embarrassing and may get in the way of a man's s*x**l activity. It is important to know that BHP is not cancer nor does it lead to cancer although a man may have both BHP and prostate cancer.

What are the symptoms of BHP?
As noted before, many men with BHP may have no significant symptoms. When BHP interferes with urine flow, however, certain characteristic symptoms may appear.

If a urinary tract infection develops, there may also be burning or pain during urination. These symptoms are caused by the way in which BHP affects the urethra and later on the bladder. In the early phase of prostatic enlargement, the bladder muscle is able to force urine through the narrowed urethra by contracting more forcefully. The bladder muscle gradually becomes stronger, thicker and overly sensitive causing a need to urinate frequently.
