Cooking of food results in the loss of many nutrients therefore, the cooking style should be such which would preserve maximum nutrional value of the food.


Food should be a source of positive health rather than a health hazard, as the saying goes; ‘one should eat to live and not live to eat’.

The food that we eat should be nutritious and should be eaten moderately.

Cooking Style
The cooking of food should aim at restoring the maximum nutritional value in it. Though, raw vegetables, if eaten, provide the maximum nutrition to the body but it is not possible to eat all the vegetables as raw. The same vegetable, when prepared in quite different ways varie in its calorific content.

Boiling, steaming or pressure cooking involves little fat and hence, is more nutritious. Shallow or deep frying involves a lot of fat, which results in high calorific value and low nutritional value of the food. Roasting, baking and grilling are compratively low in calories.

Cooking howeve, result in the loss of nutrients. The amount loss depends on the quantity of water used and the method and temprature of cooking. To preserve at soluble micro-nutrients, often lost during deep or shallow frying, coat the food with egg, flour or bread crumbs.

Food is often offered by you when someone comes home. The guest himself requests you to join in and keep him company. And in order to oblige him you munch away at some snacks.

How often does this happen? Imagine having 2 or 3 guests in a day. In such a situation, a lot of items are eaten without having the actual desire to eat them. Nobody will mind if you refuse to eat. They just tell you to join them, as a matter of courtesy.

  • Eat a variety of foods.
  • Balance the food you eat with physical activity.
  • Choose a diet low in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol.
  • Choose a diet moderate in sugars.
  • Choose a diet moderate in salt and sodium.
  • If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.

  • Avoid the food which causes irritation to the gastric membrane such as sour fruits.
