We had the opportunity to interview this great man of the homoeopathic world. Dr. Nidhi Luthra met Dr. P.N. Varma at his office at Schwabe India and talked about his life and his contributions to homoeopathy.

The basic concept is that health is a dynamic process that tends to maintain a state of optimum equilibrium through a built in self-regulatory mechanism that protects against loss of balance. Homoeopathic medicines induce a process of reorganisation of the vital funtions by stimulating the self-regulatory mechanism. As such, there are limitations of these medicines.

In case of accidents, and structural damages of irreversible nature, it has only palliative role, while in case of constitutional dysfunctions it has a curative role.

What attracted you to homoeopathy and that too the pharma-cological side of it?
I belong to a family of homoeopaths; in fact my father was the first man to set up a homoeopathic manufacturing unit in Bihar in 1927 and the first homoeopathic college. My father wanted me to take up homoeopathy but I was not very keen on it. I wanted to study, so I did my B.Sc from Patna University. I secured the top position with a Gold medal. Then I did M.Sc (Tech) Pharmaceutics from the University of Calcutta.

I met Dr. B.K. Sarkar in Calcutta and it was he who inspired me (which my father could only partly do) and I decided to devote myself to homoeopathy.
