The Bed-wetting Problem in Children

Bed-wetting is a 'closet problem,' by its very own nature, concealed from the awareness of all, but members of the immediate family. This article has been written in the hope that it will help parents learn how to deal with the problem, and how homoeopathic remedies will aid them in doing so.

Childhood is a tender age and little children suffer from a number of problems for which it is cruel to subject them to harsh measures which can lead to complications later on in the life.

One of the most frequently faced problems by children of all ages is bedwetting. Bed wetting is medically known as enuresis. It is the unintentional passing of urine during sleep at night occurring at an age when control of bladder should have been acquired.

Some children learn to stay dry all night at a very early age and some stay dry in the night and also learn to control their bladder in the daytime. A child who wets his bed recurrently after he has learned to control urination has the problem of bed wetting.

Occurence
Bed wetting is a very common problem of childhood. Bedwetting is more common in male children than in the female children, the ratio being 2:1. The reasons for this discrepancy are unknown.

Causes
As children mature at different rates, so do their abilities to control the bladder functions. Some learn to control their bladder at an early age and some at a later age. Season also has a role to play in bed wetting. It is seen more during winters and monsoons.

In some cases, especially in the lower socioeconomic -group, parents fail to train their childproperly. Another reason for this problem is a

lack of production of a chemical in the body of the child. There may be history of bed wetting of the parents in their childhood. Nightmares or bad dreams can also be a cause of bed wetting.

Physical illness such as urinary tract infections, abnormality of bladder or kidneys, irritation of external parts, worms, epilepsy and diabetes can also be a cause of enuresis. Besides, enuresis may also be due to a lag of development of nervous system’s control of elimination.

A structural abnormality of the urinary tract present from birth or a nervous system defect such as spina bifida or spinal cord damage can be a cause. Bed wetting is a common problem in careless, lazy and fat children.

Bed wetting can be due to an acute or chronic illness. It can also be due to an allergy to something. Constipation can also cause enuresis.

Psychological causes like emotional worry any other problem of the childcan be the cause of bedwetting. These problems can be, a new baby at home, some kind of fear, any tension at home, any problem at school or any other such problem which is bothering the child.
